British Foreign Office has added 11 more destinations to its public warning roster regarding the threats of methanol poisoning from tainted spirits.

The expanded advisory now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the frequency of documented incidents" of toxic alcohol poisoning.

Just a few weeks ago, the government had previously included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing register, following several high-profile cases including the deadly loss of 6 travelers in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being advised that as little as small amounts of methanol can cause vision loss or loss of life within 12–48 hrs.

What is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Utilized?

Toxic alcohol is a harmful industrial alcohol typically employed in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and paint thinner. This chemical is not meant for ingestion.

While it is generated during the creation of spirits, commercial firms bring it down to minimal, harmless amounts for human consumption through the purification method.

Yet in various destinations, it is illegally mixed into alcoholic drinks to save money, and because it is flavorless and odourless, it is extremely challenging to detect.

Government Guidance for Tourists

Government official a senior official emphasized that all travellers should be aware of the signs of toxic alcohol contamination.

"While having drinks overseas, stick to reputable establishments and refrain from local brews or unspecified beverages," the official said.

"Should anything seems unusual, like a headache that's far more intense than usual or sight issues – contact a doctor right away."

The complete list of nations identified as carrying a threat of methanol poisoning now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
