Minecraft's Mayhem Mounts Drop Introduces a Stunningly Wild New Spear to the Game
The winter content update for the block-building phenomenon has landed — and it brings with it the first new weapon introduced into the game since the mace made its debut. The lance is finally here and it could very well change how you play Minecraft, especially if you enjoy mayhem.
An Armament Designed for Chaotic Rides
The Mayhem Mounts drop also incorporates a host of fresh elements and enhancements focused on riding animals in the game. That driving concept made the spear the natural choice for this update, as the development team had long felt it was the moment to introduce a fresh combat tool.
"From the outset, we understood that we desired a fresh armament that would provide extended reach, and we envisioned it for mounted combat," stated a lead developer. "We prototyped a few different ideas, but the lance was the one that both felt great when we ran our trials and also made sense for the use case."
If you're wondering whether mounted combat means you can charge at your friends on horseback, the response is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an combat move perfectly suited for it.
"[Jousting on horses is one of the biggest applications for the spear, and it's incredibly enjoyable," the lead adds. "The spear has two attacks: You have the jab attack, where you simply impale your enemy. But you also have a powerful lance where you couch your lance and get more damage [with] the more pace you have. So [it’s] ideal for mounted duels."
Aerial Mayhem & Deep-Sea Exploration
The unruly pleasure can extend beyond there, though. If you're deep enough into the game that you've explored The End, the developers have an even more ridiculous idea. "If you are very late, [spears are] ideal for strapping on the wings and going out and creating genuine chaos," she suggests.
In other words: Sky jousting is now a reality, and it deserves to be an competitive event without delay.
Another major addition in this new update is the Nautilus. This aquatic being, which is based on the nautilus shells we've all been collecting for years, can be tamed and ridden for deep-sea journeys. Not only will it move you through the water faster than swimming, it'll also maintain your air supply, so there's no requirement to come up for air for fresh air.
The remaining new features are mostly things that want to kill you, as is the tradition of Minecraft. Unsurprisingly, there's also a zombie Nautilus appearing in the water, sometimes with a zombie villager on its back. If you manage to defeat the Drowned, though, you can claim the undead mount — or the regular one, for that matter — with a puffer fish.
"We've been thinking about this problem for some time, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it appeared to be the right time to also bring in something for the ocean depths," the developer clarifies. "For the Nautilus in particular, we had a number of concepts for aquatic rides that we wanted to try out, but the Nautilus design sketches looked compelling, and we have the connection to the Nautilus shell that was already in the game."
She also adds that there are actually two distinct kinds of undead nautilus: regular and coral-infested undead mount. "[The variants] provide diversity to what you discover underwater."
Parched Perils & Overdue Enhancements
Additional features include the sun-proof skeletons, biome-specific skeletons that can survive in the sun, which means there's no getting away from them if you end up in that region. Sometimes you'll see them on zombified camels, another fresh creature. These passive, zombified camels have an striking appearance that sees their bones protruding. The same goes for undead steeds, who have a similar rib-popping design and can sometimes be spawned in the darkness with a lance-wielding undead rider on their back.
The remaining updates on the drop's list are smaller gameplay updates, including some highly requested adjustments to equestrian travel. Now, you can traverse waterways while riding a horse. Also, netherite horse armor is now craftable at the workbench, so you can give your horse the top-tier safeguarding it is worthy of.
A Spicy Send-Off for the Year
All told, the last content update of the year is a notable addition. The spear by itself — and the mayhem it enables — would have felt like a major improvement. Combine that with the Nautilus, and new threats seeking your end, and Minecraft's definitely getting a little more dangerous.
The Mayhem Mounts content drop is out now for Java and Bedrock editions of Minecraft.
