Hodgkinson Concludes Campaign with Winning Display at Athlos in New York
The athlete recorded her personal best of one minute 54.61 seconds last year in London.
Keely Hodgkinson concluded her 800m season with a win at the all-female Athlos meet in New York on Friday night.
{The current Olympic champion, who earned third place at the World Championships recently, excelled in an impressive victory in 1:56.53 in what was only her sixth race in a season affected by a hamstring injury.
Compatriot and world silver medallist Georgia Hunter Bell finished second again in one minute 58.33 seconds, while the athlete from St Vincent Shafiqua Maloney (one minute 58.57) secured third place.
"I haven't competed much this year so it was likely less of a struggle for me to compete and want to give it something," stated Hodgkinson.
"The environment out there is incredible so it was extremely enjoyable."
The women-only event packed the stadium in its second edition, introducing a festive vibe to traditional track, with musical performances and Tiffany & Co. crowns replacing standard medals.
The 23-times tennis major winner Serena W., who is married to Athlos founder Alexis O., was present to present the winners with their crowns.
Last year's winners received $60,000 (forty-four thousand six hundred and three pounds) - one of the largest prize purses in athletics.
The event also attracted some of the sport's biggest names, as Kenya's triple Olympic champion and world record holder Faith K. won the mile, finishing in four hours 17.78 minutes.
The US Brittany B., the 200m bronze winner from last year's Paris Olympics, won the 100m and 200m double.
